Option #1 This is the largest, most complete Chin Hakha dictionary. It is 2 volumes and probably very expensive for you, but can be ordered. I do not know if they ship to Myanmar or if the mail service in Yangon is reliable. I do not know where you can buy the little blue/green paperback Dr. David Van Bik dictionary in Myanmar.

Option #2 is to click on the blue tab on the first page of our dictionary that says: Dictionary Desktop App for Windows so you can view our dictionary on your computer even when there is no Internet connection.
Option #3 http://laitechforu.blogspot.com/ You can download the dictionary app to your smart phone, etc.
          Option #4 http://lewisvillechin.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/02/english-to-chin-hakha-dictionary-01.20.2014.pdf
This is 327 page pdf that can be printed.
Option #5 https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ndt.mobile.dictionary.offline.enchin Android app for smart devices.

Options #2-#5 are the Dr. David Van Bik dictionary. http://www.chin-dictionary on-line differs from these in that it is an enhanced version. The original example sentences have been attached to multiple words so that the user can see more English words in their sentence context. Ms. Peggy hopes that the time and effort she spent copying and pasting sentences to appropriate words helps the Burmese Chin around the world understand English faster.

Do you know if there is any plans for chin to be added to google translate ? I am a high school Art teacher and even with a dictionary the literal words don’t always translate correctly. For example my students have a project to illustrate a song that they chose but when I used the dictionary she drew pictures of notes. She wants to work and I feel like I am failing her by not being able to communicate fluently with her.

          • pwennerlind

I doubt that Chin Hakha will be added to google translate since there aren’t that many speakers of this language worldwide. It would be wonderful if that occurred. There is a larger more extensive online English Myanmar Chin dictionary AP from ChinLand Development Corporation for sale in the Apple Store. http://www.tongdot.com is useful because it has multiple Chin languages and Aps for Apple and android products. I hope this helps.

I recently started to tutor a Hakha Chin man here in New Bern, NC. I just discovered your internet dictionary and I am sure it will be of the greatest assistance in helping me help him to speak and read English; and, to assist him on his route to American citizenship You’all have done a great job with this and have provided and invaluable resource to the Chin refugees now here the US and for those of us trying to assist them

I am working with several Chin refugee families. I am in desperate need of some phrases translated to Chin if possible. We had a young lady translating but she moved so we no longer have someone and I have some families I need to get some information to/from. The phrases I need translated are:

Your child needs to visit a dentist.
Your child needs a check-up from a doctor.
Your child needs to see an eye doctor.
Your child passed his/her vision screening.
Your child failed his/her vision screening.
Your child passed his/her dental screening.
Your child failed his/her dental screening.
    Please sign here.
    Please sign this form.
Please send a coat with your child.
We are having a family activity night on ____________.
Your child had a great day today.
Your child didn’t have a great day but tomorrow will be better.

I have a couple forms that we use with all our families to determine strengths/needs that I would love to get translated to Chin, if at all possible. Feel free to email me at iamdizzie@ gmail.com if you’d be willing to help.

I recently met a family in my neighborhood that only speak the Hakha.Chin dialect. A daughter is able to translate but she is not always available. I would like to learn a few phrases that would get me started in conversing with them.

Such as: Hello, my name is Ruth. How are You? Something simple like that. I see that I will be able to download a dictionary. Thanks for any help.

Thank you so much for this dictionary! I am a foster mom with refugees living in my home. In a couple of days a young lady who speaks Chin Hakha will be arriving in my home. This dictionary will be such a blessing to help me communicate with her. I have other refugees in my home whose language is so obscure there is no dictionary. I am going to download this to her phone so she can have the resource as well. Many Blessings!!

http://www.hobugt.dk/ Johs. Lind, Denmark, has studied the Chin language and explains the grammar in Danish. Google will translate this site to English, however it won’t be a perfect translation. You may gain some understanding of Chin Hakha grammar. http://hobugt.dk/ordbog/artikler/language.htm Johs. has this list of available technical papers written about Chin Hakha if you have the time to study them. Also listed are links to grammar articles by Roland Siang Nawl, M. Div., now living in Melbourne, Australia, who is writing the first ever Chin grammar.

Johs. Lind is compling the Chin to English dictionary from his own Chin-English-Danish and another from the Van Bik family. These 2 smaller dictionaries will make a larger, better Chin to English Dictionary. Mr. Lind is an amazing man, doing a difficult task, and it may take several months. Chris will have it online as soon as possible.

Thank you making these dictionary in PDF files. What about in the form of application (executable) ? So that the remote area like Myanmar can have more access to it.

    Reply
    • Chris Baldelomar

      Hi C. Bawl Ceu Mang

If what you are talking about is the ability for people in remote areas like Myanmar to have access to the dictionary while they are not connected to the internet, all they would need to do is save the pdf file onto their computer. Afterward they will forever have a viewable copy of the entire Chin (Hakha) Dictionary. All they need is a PDF reader which is very common and freely available. Let me know if this answers your question.

Do you think people might now know that they can save the PDF onto their computer?

Or were you talking about the possibility of an app where you can still search for words while you are offline?

      Reply
      • C. Bawi Ceu Mang

Thank you for your sincere reply.
In offline situation, it might help them if they use the PDF version, but looking for specific dictionary word in PDF will be a bit difficult for us. If we can have these dictionary in App it will be a lot easier for most of us.
Don’t get me wrong, I even try to do these Chin (Hakha) Dictionary by my own but I can’t finish my own as I have to look at the Text and write it to my Computer. But I do finish my Python Script for these app and if you want I can sent it to you and we can work together.
I just wanted to help my people and if I say anything wrong please forgive me. And for my English as Im still learning English.
And again thank you for your wonderful time for doing these website. May God Bless You.
